Derbyshire Premier & County Cricket LeaguesSwarkestone close the gapA thrilling finale at Swarkestone saw the home side squeeze to a narrow one wicket win over Ticknall to move within five points of early leaders Chesterfield in the Beechwood MG sponsored Premier League. Swarkestone pipped Ticknall’s 158 all out with just one ball to spare, making full use of an extra over gained by bowling their visitors out in the 49th over. Chesterfield were struggling for the second week running, this time at Dunstall, coming up short on 143 for 8 chasing the host’s 195 for 7. Dunstall are now third as a result. Denby suffered their first top-flight defeat with last season’s runners-up Sandiacre Town sealing a fairly comfortable four wicket win and reigning champions Ockbrook & Borrowash also made up lost ground by collecting 20pts from a winning-draw at Alvaston & Boulton. Matt Lineker hit a century for Ockbrook and next best innings of the day was by Raja Sohail Haider whose superb unbeaten 90 helped Rolls Royce Leisure hang on for a draw at Quarndon. The 10pts gained by Royces sees them move off the bottom of the table at the expense of Spondon whose first action of the season ended in a heavy defeat to Lullington Park. Clifton scored their third win of the season and lead Abbey Glass Division One by 7pts over Eckington. Clifton’s defeated opponents were Division One new boys Duffield who are currently languishing in tenth place. Eckington, following their Bank Holiday win at Matlock, found Stainsby Hall a much more difficult proposition but came out on top in a drawn match to move above their opponents in the table. Ilkeston Rutland drop to fourth after their match at waterlogged Marehay was called off and cancelled also was the game between newly-promoted Cutthorpe and Sawley & Long Eaton Park. Sawley have yet to see action in 2012. Alfreton finally showed some good form with a six wicket win over Staveley Welfare and Matlock bounced back brilliantly from Monday’s defeat to register an easy 144-run win over Elvaston. Kevin Leatherday (118*) and Matt Cluer (91) provided the runs. ‘the follow on’ Division Two has new leaders in Rolleston who wasted no time in beating Sandiacre Town 2nds and they are closely followed by Langley Mill who thrashed Shipley Hall. And in Burton Glass Division Three South Wingfield have a narrow 5pt lead at the top following an equally narrow two run victory at home to Marehay. Brailsford and Wirksworth both won to stay well in touch. With the 2012 season now under way, all the latest news can be found right here.
